Trailer for the John Hillcoat adaptation of Cormac McCarthy’s The Road

It may just be the nature of trailers, but this looks like more of a straight-up post-apocalyptic thriller than the question-everything-then-kill-yourself, soul-crushing, depression-inducing post-apocalyptic thriller masterpiece that the novel is. (“Reading The Road is rather like attending the beautiful funeral of someone you love who has died young. You’re happy that the ceremony seems to be going so well, and you know you’ll remember the experience for the rest of your life, but the truth is that you’d rather not be there at all.”—Nick Hornby)

Which is not to say that this movie doesn’t also look pretty fucking awesome.

Hmmm … yeah, the trailer itself doesn’t look/feel particularly McCarthy-ish … and I do wonder how a better McCarthy movie than No Country could possibly be made. Then again, I will still gladly see this.

ALSO, full disclosure, I still haven’t read The Road. It’s next on my list.

Having read The Road I can understand the need to play up certain aspects of it to understandably market it to the populace. That being said I’m worried that A) people are going to be let down by the lack of action they were led to believe was herein or B) The filmmakers crammed it full of ‘setpieces’ negating the nuance of the book. The book is spectacular.
